“Studying Digital Harm” by Jaigris Hodson (Royal Roads University)

With recent world events in mind, the study of online abuse and its harms has never been more important. For researchers and research participants though, these lines of inquiry can open up the possibility of new unanticipated and surprising danger, including doxxing and other privacy breaches, trolling, and cyberharassment. It is therefore imperative that we conduct such work in ways that protect the most vulnerable, and that scholars keep themselves safe while doing so. In this presentation, Hodson draws on nearly a decade of feminist work studying online harms to offer pathways forward for other researchers embarking on this work. She details important considerations, and offers a provocation for how we interact with others and share our knowledge in contrasted digital spaces. [virtual option available]

Jaigris Hodson is the Canada Research Chair (tier 2) in Polarization, Misinformation and Online anti-social behavior. Her SSHRC and CIHR funded research has examined the ways that misinformation and growing polarization can be mitigated through digital communication efforts, particularly those targeted at the research community. She has extensively studied online toxicity directed at academics and research communicators, and ways to mitigate these harms. She has worked with Health Quality BC, The Conversation Canada, and the Conversation UK on developing tools and training to mitigate the harms of online toxic behavior, and she is currently working to understand the links between polarization misinformation and online harassment. She is a Resident Fellow with the Cascade Institute, a member of the Clarity Foundation’s Advisory Board, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Council of Canadian Academies.
